A multinational shipping firm hired Byju Raveendran as a service engineer after he completed his engineering education. He took the CAT exam in the year 2005 and was ranked in the 99.9th percentile when he was still working. Friends preparing to enter IIMs approached him for help, leading to the start of informal coaching sessions. Teaching began as one of the activities he pursued alongside his employment.

Word spread quickly. The number of students increased by thousands within a very short time. Classes were full to the brim, and there were lengthy waiting lists. Byju took a drastic step, realizing the increasing demand and his interest in teaching. He left his high-paying job to become a full-time teacher. Only in 2011, after a strategic shift, did Think and Learn begin its operations. Instead of limiting its work to competitive examinations, the company expanded its scope to include K-12 education. During the 2020 pandemic, the company decided to make the platform free for students, rather than focusing on revenue. The adoption was quite high as a result of this ruling. By late 2015, the company had reached a valuation of $10 billion and had passed 100 million learners worldwide. In June 2024, it began insolvency proceedings, not because of a lack of demand or failure of its products, but because capital was limited. The company's democratic board structure faced intense external pressure, not internal wrangling, leading to resignations.

Several lawsuits were brought in different jurisdictions, and the outcome gave the impression that they were all failing. The regulator's investigations ended without criminal evidence. A $1 billion default judgment issued in the United States was later reversed after evidence emerged. The media did not reevaluate previous arguments. Instead of focusing on the failed company, the founder fought an organized financial and reputational attack. In December 2025, the Delaware Bankruptcy Court overturned the $1 billion damages award. It was proven that the $533 million in question was spent on the company and its development with no personal enrichment. Banking verified transparency. He has also promised to take legal action in various jurisdictions to establish the facts in a transparent manner, reiterating his core belief that education “Don’t belong in courtrooms, we belong in classrooms”. His cause is still the same: education is supposed to be conducted in classrooms, not in courts. He has assumed personal responsibility for the students and employees affected negatively by the crisis.

The plans center on implementing Byju version three, specifically point zero. Artificial intelligence will be created to help teachers, but not to substitute them. Special focus will be on improving the performance of poor-performing students. Reconstruction would focus on rehiring former employees with deep knowledge of the company culture. Since 2024, the founder has not received a salary but has used personal wealth to fund stabilization programs. It is not aimed at reviving the company through valuation, but at restoring trust and educational value.
